Welcome to my website where you may view and read about some of my artwork.
My primary medium is clay as it is tactile and provides infinite possibilities for construction, modeling, carving and decoration. Unlike other sculpting mediums, clay is forgiving, allowing the artist to add, subtract, and even recycle! Being a cautious, methodical worker, the clay has provided me with an avenue for expression and concept-development through interaction with the material itself.
Tile Work
My tile-work is strongly influenced by Oriental Carpet design as well as Greek, Roman and Islamic Art and Architecture. As a child, growing up during the war in Beirut, our rugs became my playground. Their colors, design and symbolism provided gardens for play and respite from the world outside. They now present me with a format to express stories and opinions using my personal symbols instead of traditional imagery.
Sculpture
My sculptural work primarily explores the human figure and plays with tension and balance. Through the slow process of carving or coil-building the figures, I incrementally work out indecision, conflict and harmony.
Pottery
One of my initial attractions to working with clay was the ability to create every day functional objects that would provide visual and sensory enjoyment. I like to explore form by assembling sections together, and find myself increasing interested in texture and carving to decorate the surface.
